For four consecutive years now, Kasangazi Primary School in Mzimba District boasts of a high school performance of its learners, even close to 90 percent pass rate registered in 2019. The school management attributes the high rated school performance to the locally generated electricity by one innovator, Colred Nkosi.

According to the Head teacher for the school, since 2018 when Nkosi connected Kangazi Primary school to his self-generated hydroelectric power, the school has continuously achieved commendable pass rates, with most of its learners being selected to secondary schools. “Indeed, the hydroelectric power generated by Nkosi has assisted the school since learners are able to come to school and study even during the evening or after classes,” he said.

He said using the electricity, teachers at the school are also able to give the learners extra classes. In the recently released 2022 Primary School Living Certificate (PSCL), out of 29 learners who sat for examinations, 24 passed, representing an 82 percent pass rate.

In 2019 the school achieved 89%, in 2020 the pass rate was 78 percent and in 2021, and they achieved 89% in 2022. One pupil who sat for the 2022 PSCL and passed, Mercy Nyirenda expressed gratitude to Nkosi innovation.

“I had extra time to study because of the electricity.   Sometimes we had extra lessons because of the electricity.

This helped us to be more equipped for the examinations,” she said. For Nkosi, the improved performance has encouraged him to reach out to more schools.

He expressed hope of connecting more schools including Chimpombo and Makali Primary Schools in the area. .
